The parameters I had in coming up with a new look for Experience Victoria were that the logo and bright blue used for the staff’s uniforms were to remain, and a new, distinct font be chosen that would share similarities to the Supernatural B.C. campaign by Tourism B.C.. The CEO, Steve Earnshaw had appreciated the work I had done for Oak Bay Tourism and consequently asked me to design his new map idea.
The solution I came up with was both whimsical and polished. Rainier, a font with hundreds of glyphs, alternates and styles was the perfect anchoring font that met the requested design guidelines. With free reign most other aspects, I created the concept of an open palm with destination pins showcasing Victoria’s top highlights. These two elements are key to making Experience Victoria’s maps memorable and attractive.
A clean look, but packed with information, the maps for Experience Victoria were a hit with the many tourists who come to the city for it’s distinct British-Meets-West Coast charm, and natural breathtaking beauty.
